Who wore number 6 in volleyball?

Athletes in every team sport have a number on their jersey to identify them. In professional volleyball, players are given numbers between 1 and 20. Sometimes, players get to choose their own number and other times, they’re just assigned a number by the team.

Steve Timmons

Steve Dennis Timmons is an American former volleyball player who represented the United States at three consecutive Summer Olympics starting in 1984, winning gold in 1984 and 1988 plus a bronze in 1992.

Steve played volleyball and basketball at Newport Harbor High School. He then attended Orange Coast College (OCC), playing for the OCC Pirates basketball team that won the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) state basketball championship and the Pirates volleyball team that was runner-up in the CCCAA state volleyball championship. Timmons then attended the University of Southern California, playing for the Trojans volleyball team that won the 1980 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Tournament.

Timmons’ Olympic teammate, Karch Kiraly, has also been a teammate on other teams, including the USA team at the 1986 World Championship and the 1986 Goodwill Games, as well as professional teammates with Italian league team Porto Ravenna Volley, where they won the Italian Volleyball League in 1991 and the CEV Champions League in 1992.

Timmons co-founded and is the former president of Redsand, an action sports clothing and lifestyle brand, which he sold in 2003.

Timmons was married to basketball executive Jeanie Buss, daughter of Jerry Buss, from 1990 to 1993. From 1997 to 2018, he was married to actress Debbe Dunning (Heidi on Home Improvement) and they have three children together.

Renan Dal Zotto

Renan Dal Zotto is a Brazilian former volleyball player who competed in three editions of the Summer Olympics. He is also known as the head coach of Brazil men’s national volleyball team. He was born in São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul. In 1980 he was part of the Brazilian team which finished fifth in the Olympic tournament. He played five matches.

Four years later he won the silver medal with the Brazilian team in the 1984 Olympic tournament. He played all six matches. At the 1988 Games he was a member of the Brazilian team which finished fourth in the 1988 Olympic tournament. He played all seven matches. As coach he worked mostly with clubs in Brazil, plus a season in Italy, all in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2017 he was appointed as the new head coach of the Brazil men’s team, replacing Bernardo Rezende who was in office during the last sixteen years.

He was also disciplined by the FIVB when cameras clearly showed him intentionally rolling a ball on court mid rally. This was during an important 5th set in 2018 vs Russia. In his statement he failed to apologize for the incident or admit fault.

Josef Musil

Josef Musil was a Czech volleyball player. He won two Olympic medals, in 1964 and 1968, as well as five world and three European championships medals in 1952–1967.

Jimmy George

Jimmy George is a former volleyball player and member of India men’s national volleyball team. George is often considered one of the greatest volleyball players of all time. He was the first Indian volleyball player to become a professional and played club volleyball in Italy. He is brother-in-law of the olympian Anju Bobby George.

At age 21, Jimmy George was the youngest volleyball player to win the Arjuna Award. He was given the G.V. Raja Award in 1975 and won the Manorama Award, for the best sportsman of Kerala, in 1976. He was judged the best player in the Persian Gulf region while playing for Abu Dhabi Sports Club, from 1979-82. He played as a professional in Italy from 1982-1984 and 1985-1987, and in his prime was considered one of the best attackers of the world. In 2000, Malayala Manorama, a newspaper in Malayalam, honored him as the best sportsman of Kerala of the 20th century.

Gabrielle Reece

Gabrielle Allyse Reece is an American professional volleyball player, sports announcer, fashion model and actress.

After graduation, Reece played on professional volleyball tours for several years. For four consecutive years, Reece was the WBVL skills leader from 1993–1996. She was named the Offensive Player of the Year in 1994–95, and the League blocks leader in 1993. She also competed domestically in the 1999–2000 Olympic Challenge Series, the 1999–2000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, and other competitions.

Reece trained in golf for four years hoping to make it onto the LPGA but was unsuccessful. In 2009, she said: “… with young children, I simply didn’t have the time for such a demanding game”.

Samuele Papi

Samuele Papi is an Italian former volleyball player and a member of Italy men’s national volleyball team in 1993-2012, silver and bronze medalist of the Olympic Games, multiple winner of the European Championship and World Championship, silver medalist of the World Cup 2003, three-time CEV Champions League winner, double CEV Cup winner, four-time Challenge Cup winner, six-time Italian Champion.

Matey Kaziyski

Matey Kaziyski is a Bulgarian volleyball player, known as a member of Bulgaria men’s national volleyball team during 2003–2012 and Italian club Trentino Volley, a participant of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, bronze medalist of the World Championship 2006, World Cup 2007 and European Championship 2009. He is a multiple winner of the CEV Champions League and FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship with the Italian club Trentino Volley.

Mauricio Lima

Maurício Camargo Lima is a retired volleyball player from Brazil. He participated in both Olympic gold medals of the Brazil men’s national volleyball team, against The Netherlands at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain and against Italy at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

He also won 5 Volleyball World Leagues (1993, 2001, 2003 and 2004), the 2002 FIVB Men’s World Championship and the 2003 FIVB Men’s World Cup.

Bartosz Kurek

Bartosz Kamil Kurek is a Polish volleyball player, known as a member of the Poland men’s national volleyball team, participant at the Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016), 2018 World Champion, 2009 European Champion, 2012 World League winner, multiple-time Polish Champion (2009, 2010, 2011), Italian Champion (2014). In 2019, he became the first ever volleyball player to be voted the Polish Sports Personality of the Year.

Marco Meoni

Marco Meoni is a volleyball player from Italy, who won the silver medal with the Men’s National Team at the 1996 Summer Olympics. A year earlier he was on the side that claimed the European title in Greece. He is an Olympian for his native country, also winning bronze at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

With Copra Piacenza he won the silver medal at the 2007-08 Indesit Champions League and also was individually awarded “Most Valuable Player”. After retiring in 2013, he returned to play in Italy’s Superlega in January 2015, again for Copra Piacenza.

Benjamin Toniutti

Benjamin Toniutti is a French volleyball player, known as a member of the France men’s national volleyball team, 2020 Olympic Champion, 2015 European Champion, World League winner (2015, 2017), Champions League winner (2021), German Champion (2015), multiple-time Polish Champion (2016, 2017, 2019). At the professional club level, he’s known for playing with Jastrzębski Węgiel.

On 13 April 2015, Toniutti signed a contract with Polish club ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle. On 18 October 2015, the French national volleyball team, including him, achieved a title of the European Champions (3–0 with Slovenia in the final). On 26 April 2016, he won his first title of the Polish Champion. Toniutti was named The Most Valuable Player of the whole season, also during the league, he received an individual MVP award ten times. On 2 May 2016, it was announced that Toniutti extended his contract for the next two seasons (until 2018). On 9 July 2017, France won the World League after beating Brazil in the final. In 2018, ZAKSA extended the contract with Toniutti until 2019.
