Seating plan of the AT&T Center

This is a three level facility, with lower, suite and upper levels. The lower level is further divided along the sidelines, with 12 suites boxed off along each sideline, about 13 rows up, and the lowest seats are considered “charter seats”, among the most expensive in the building. Special note here about the suite level – in the west end zone one can find the Terrace Club restaurant, a premium club offering full bar service and an elaborate pregame buffet.

The first row of tables and a seating rail offer service with a view of the playing surface, and for these spots tickets are actually sold. Adjoining the Terrace Club in each corner are two “Party Zone” suites. These seats are sectioned off from the 100 level and offer their own private bar and lounge. These seats are the most popular in the building and are sold out on a season ticket basis.

All seats are colored black. Interesting choice of colors, but scattered among the black seats are the occasional red, yellow, green, orange and purple chair. The effect is best noticed when the bowl is empty, and is designed this way to give the appearance of scattered confetti. The modern and futuristic center scoreboard is a four sided video board, crowned above by an eight sided color dot matrix board. Digital LED boards wrap around the balcony sidelines and corners, accompanied by a one-color dot matrix boards in each end zone, offering basic game information.

Premium Seating

There is a great deal of attention given here to club and premium seating. We mentioned the box suites and the charter seats along the 100 level sideline, and these seatholders have access to a charter level concourse below the main concourse. This area is called the Spurs Club, with its own private lounge, and each of the box suites have their own private suite underneath the seating area as well.

These suites have their own living room with plasma monitor, large dining/conference table and are ideally suited towards business entertainment. The second level concourse is the suite level, and suites ring most of the second level of the building save for the west end zone. Of course, here is the Terrace Club restaurant, open to any premium seat holders.

Tickets for Spurs games at the AT&T Center are remarkably affordable. There aren’t really any bad seats in the venue and the sight lines are fantastic. With that being said, upper bowl tickets start at $10 per person. You will be high up, but you won’t miss any of the action on the court.

Concessions and parking costs are on par with the rest of the NBA, so you know going in what you have the potential to spend.

As the Spurs have been perennially a playoff team for over 20 years, you are more than likely going to see a great game no matter when you attend. It’s not quite the heyday of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker, but it is still the Spurs.

Where to eat?

NBA arenas typically don’t pull out the same number of stops that NFL and MLB facilities do when it comes to food. They do, however, offer a wide variety of truly great food, and this holds true for the food and beverage scene at the AT&T Center. There aren’t any “stunt” menu items at Spurs games, but there is everything you could want for your belly.

The regular food stands offer a wide cross-section of South Texas favorites such as Tex-Mex and barbecue, and there are also more upscale offerings at the floor level Saddle & Spurs Club, such as artisan flatbreads and gourmet hot dogs.

Last season (2017-18), KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley opened a location of their Rock & Brews Restaurant inside the AT&T Center. Fronting the Bud Light Courtyard, which has live music and food trucks on game nights, Rock & Brews features a wide variety of beer options, as well as what they bill as “non-traditional American comfort food” options – think high-end burgers, fries and sandwiches.

In time for the 2018-19 season, celebrity chef Johnny Hernandez opened branches of two of his signature restaurants in the AT&T Center on the Terrace Level; La Gloria specializes in street food from Mexico, where popular items include their bistec (steak) tacos for $11 or Pescado Baja California (fish) tacos for $15. Right next to La Gloria is Chef Johnny’s Burgerteca restaurant, offering Mexican-inspired hamburgers and hot dogs – the Al Pastor Burger and Mexican Street Dog ($13 and $9.50) are very popular at this eatery.

You can also get your traditional stadium staples of hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels, and nachos in nearly every food kiosk in the AT&T Center and, if all else fails, you can visit the Whataburger stand on the plaza level near the team shop.

Atmosphere

The Spurs really have done a great job of making the AT&T Center both inviting for fans and inclusive of San Antonio culture. As we are in the age of photo ops, the Spurs and the AT&T Center have done a great deal to add these spots around the arena. For example, on the walkway toward the main entrance, a large statue of the team logo is out front inviting selfie takers to stop on by.

Brightly colored murals, many of which feature the beloved Spurs Coyote offer spots for pics throughout the arena. In addition, the team’s five NBA Championship trophies are another popular selfie spot on the plaza level (directly in front of Rock & Brews).

In addition to all the photo spots, there is also the team history that adds to the atmosphere. Photos of Spurs greats from the past dot the walls of the arena. You can also look toward the rafters to see the five championship banners and the retired jersey numbers, to be reminded of all the history the team has built in S.A.

Neighborhood

San Antonio is one of the top tourist destinations in the country, boasting year-round temperate climates, numerous tourist attractions, and a thriving food scene. With that being said, you will be hard-pressed to find any of that in the area immediately surrounding the AT&T Center.

The arena was built near an industrial park and is not conducive to activities before or after the game. However, depending on traffic, you are just a short 10-15 minute drive from downtown and the heart of everything that is everything in San Antonio.

The Alamo? It’s there. The historic River Walk? It’s there. Shopping, dining, hotels? Yep, yep, and yep. You’ll find all of that in downtown San Antonio.

If you are a first-time visitor to the city, take a river barge cruise on the San Antonio River. The Go Rio Cruises offer passengers a guided tour of the River Walk, as well as offer unique historical tidbits of some of the city’s most famous spots. If the weather is right, you can’t beat these 30-minute respites on the river.

Fans

Spurs fans are flat out rabidly passionate about their team. Being the only pro game in town, the Spurs have a virtual monopoly on the sporting passions of the residents of the Alamo City. This loyalty shows at home games at the AT&T Center; the home crowd is a sea of silver and black. Jerseys, t-shirts, hats, and luchador masks – you will see all of this and more at San Antonio Spurs games.

The energy from the crowd is palpable. When the Spurs go on a run or make a big three or a dunk, the roof virtually comes off the arena. You won’t be able to help but get caught up in that energy – unless you’re rooting for the opposing team, that is.

New facility

The Spurs campaigned for several years for a new facility. The Spurs and the city had come to an agreement to build a new facility adjacent to the Alamodome, but in a last-minute reversal, the team partnered with Bexar County to construct a new arena adjacent to the Freeman Coliseum. As a part of the agreement, the facility would be home to the Spurs, a new ice hockey team (what became the Rampage), and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo event.

The facility would be funded through an increase of hotel and car rental taxes, and Bexar County voters approved the plan. Coincidentally, the election was held on the same day the Spurs received their NBA Championship rings for their first NBA championship.

Rick Pych is the Chief Development Officer of the AT&T Center and led the Spurs franchise through its development, construction and opening in 2002.

Unlike most arenas that can accommodate basketball and ice hockey, AT&T Center was primarily designed for basketball. Nevertheless, it can accommodate an NHL-sized ice hockey rink, but it can only accommodate a maximum of 16,151 people for ice hockey since the seating arrangement for ice hockey is asymmetrical.

There are only a few permanent rows of seating on the lower level of the west end, and all of the upper-level sets on the west end of the arena have obstructed views. This would result in poor sightlines. However, the seating capacity for Rampage games is under 7,000 people, making the upper level not necessary for those events.

In 2012, the Rampage renamed the press box to the “Jessica Redfield Press Box” after Jessica Redfield, an aspiring news broadcaster and a former team intern who was killed in the Aurora theater shooting.

Construction

After the arena referendum passed, planning quickly began for construction on the new facility. Naming rights were obtained when an agreement was reached with San Antonio-based SBC Communications to name the new arena the SBC Center. The agreement was reported to be for a total of $41 million over 20 years.

Ground was officially broken on the facility in August 2000. The arena’s basic design was similar to many of the other newer arenas in the NBA, thanks to the choice of Minneapolis-based Ellerbe Becket as the primary architects. A nationally recognized, local architecture firm, Lake/Flato, was teamed with Ellerbe Becket to work on the design of the structure. Lake/Flato is responsible for introducing a South Texas vernacular to the overall look of the arena. Ellerbe Becket was responsible for Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Indianapolis) design as well as Capital One Arena (Washington, D.C.).

Renovations

On December 9, 2014 the Bexar County Commissioners Court gave Spurs Sports and Entertainment permission to begin up to $101.5 million in renovations to the AT&T Center.

The renovations started in the summer of 2015 when the San Antonio Spurs ended the 2015 season. They are planned to include a new scoreboard, updated televisions inside and outside of the arena, a new state of the art sound system, and improved wifi that will cover about 90% of the venue. Expansions to the fan shop and other major parts of the AT&T Center are also in the plans. The renovations were funded by a tax increase for improvements to the Tobin Center, parts of the Mission Reach expansion, and the rodeo grounds located next to the AT&T Center.
