Without the flags, the referee will find it difficult to decide whether the player will be given a throw-in, corner kick, or to continue playing. If the ball crosses the touchline, the player will do a throw-in. If the ball crosses the end line, the player receives a goal kick or corner kick. However, if the ball hits the flag and bounces back into the field, it means that the game is still in play.

All corner flags used in the game are almost the same, except for the weight. Two types of corner flags are commonly used. These are natural surface flags and artificial surface flags. The natural surface flags are heavier and are often used for outdoor football matches. The artificial surface flags weigh less than the natural surface flags and can be used on both indoor and outdoor football fields. The natural surface flags are installed directly into the ground, while the artificial flag has a dome-shaped plastic base in the bottom and can be placed above ground.
