Sack yards lost
“Sacked yards lost” in American football refers to the distance a quarterback travels after being tackled by the opposing team’s defence behind the line of scrimmage. A sack occurs when a quarterback is stopped short of throwing the ball and is tackled by a defensive player before doing so. The yards lost are measured from the original line of scrimmage until the point at which the quarterback is tackled.
The goal of the defensive play, the sack, is to impede the opposing team’s passing game and put them in an unfavorable situation. Both the defensive player who made the sack and the quarterback who was sacked have their statistics recorded. The amount of sacked yards lost is used to gauge how well an offensive line protects the quarterback and how well the defense can apply pressure to him.
