On-base percentage
What is on-base percentage in baseball?
The on-base percentage counts how many times the player reaches the bases. It considers the hits-by-pitches, walks, and other events leading to advance. The errors, fielder’s choice, or dropped third strike cancel such appearance.
The statisticians calculate it as the ratio of total times the player reached the bases until out to the number of at-bat appearances. It varies in range .300-.600 as well. There is no definition of calculating the advancing to the second or third bases during the game appearance.
Some fans prefer to calculate it themselves. They take into account hits (H), base on balls (BB), hits by pitch (HBP), sacrifice flies (SF), and at-bats (AB). HBP and BB include twice in the formula because it’s OBP= (H+BB+HBP)/(AB+BB+HBP+SF).
