Fielding independent pitching
What is fielding independent pitching in baseball?
The fielding independent pitching (FIP) statistic is similar to the earned run average. Their only difference is that the FIP focuses exclusively on the pitcher’s control events. That means outs and strikes, home runs and hit-by-pitches. All these happenings don’t hit into the field of play. Its formula is:
FIP = (13*HR + 3*BB + 2*K)/IP +C.
C here is a constant re-centering the league-average FIP to fix its average ERA.
