Rogers Arena (Vancouver, British Columbia)

The Rogers Arena is an indoor sports arena located at 800 Griffiths Way in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. Opened in 1995, the arena was known as General Motors Place (GM Place) from its inception until July 6, 2010, when General Motors Canada ceased sponsorship of title rights, and a new agreement was reached with Rogers Communications Arena Rogers was built to replace the Pacific Coliseum as the main sports facility in Vancouver, and partly due to the expansion of the National Basketball Association in 1995 in Canada, when expansion teams were provided to Vancouver and Toronto.

It is home to the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League and the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League. The arena also hosted hockey competitions at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The name of the arena temporarily became a Canadian hockey venue during the Olympic Games. It was previously home to the Vancouver Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association.

Ticket Information:

For the latest ticket information, fans are advised to follow @CanucksTickets and @RogersArena on Twitter.

Vancouver is an especially expensive city. It seems that every aspect of life in the Lower Mainland region is more expensive, and in this country hockey tickets are certainly not an exception. However, last-minute tickets to less popular games can be purchased for a very reasonable amount. For example, 24 hours before the game against Minnesota, Upper Bowl tickets were available from $50. However, for tickets against a competitor such as Edmonton, the same places cost $90 or higher.

Concessions are quite expensive, although they are among the best in the league in terms of choice and quality. However, choosing a public transport instead of driving can be an excellent option to save money, and intercepting some of the cheaper tickets can make playing the Canucks reasonable, especially while they are in decline. There are always good looks in the arena, and excitement grows around some exciting young players who are now wearing blue and green.

How to get there?

Rogers Arena is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The place is easily accessible by public transport and private transport.

From the Fraser Valley

Follow Highway 1 to the west. Take First Avenue and follow First Avenue until you reach Quebec Street. Turn right onto Quebec street and follow it until the road forks. Turn left at the fork of the Expo. Follow the Expo Boulevard to Rogers Stadium.

Horseshoe Bay/West Vancouver

Follow Highway 1 east. Take the Taylor Way and go south. Turn left on Marine Drive. Take the exit for Lions Gate Bridge and walk through Stanley Park.  Follow Georgia through the street to Beatty Street, then turn left. Turn right on Pender Street, then turn right again on Abbott Street, which will lead you to the arena.

From Tsawwassen

Follow Highway 17 North until you cross Highway 99. Follow Highway 99 North, over the Oak Street Bridge. Follow Oak Street to the north until you reach 49th Avenue. Turn right onto 49th Avenue and then left onto Cambie Street. Follow Cambie Street to Cambie Street Bridge and take the first exit onto Pacific Boulevard leading to Rogers Arena.

From the Portal of Peace through the Border Crossing

Follow highway 99 to the north. Cross the bridge over Oak Street and follow Oak Street north until you reach 49th Avenue. Turn right onto 49th Avenue and turn left on Cambie Street. Follow Cambie Street to Cambie Street Bridge and take the first exit onto Pacific Boulevard leading to Rogers Arena.

The use of public transport

We are easily accessible by public transport. The nearest SkyTrain station is Stadium-Chinatown. For information on the directions of public transport to the Rogers Arena stadium, please visit TransLink.

Parking

We are located 15 minutes walk from more than 7000 parking spaces. This includes our own underground parking lot, section 987, accessible from Griffiths Road on the west side of the building. The park can be reached by driving either along Expo Boulevard or Pacific Boulevard, and turning into Griffiths Street. From the Expo Boulevard, turn left onto Griffiths Street and then left into the park. From Pacific Boulevard, turn left onto Griffiths Way and then right into the park. There is only one entrance to the park, marked “Rogers Arena Parking”.

* Note: Regular public parking is not available during hockey games. **

Disabled parking

In the underground park, on plot 987, there are parking spaces for cars below 6’6 inches, accessible from Griffiths Way.

To find out the cost and availability of parking, as well as reserve underground parking for disabled people for a game, concert or other event in Canucks, please contact the fan support service by email. Please note: Disabled parking places are subject to availability.

Getting to Rogers Arena is completely easy, but driving is not recommended. Parking is very expensive, with a large traffic jam rate. Fifteen minutes away, there is an arena, and some other options, but public transport is a much better bet. Vancouver’s extensive SkyTrain system places fans near the arena at Stadium-Chinatown Station. The station is located at the Expo Line and is convenient for getting to the central region and Waterfront station or to the eastern suburbs. Also close to the arena is the Falls Creek ferry terminal, which carries passengers along the southern tip of the city center, as well as to the tourist hot spot on Granville Island and the Kitsilano beach area.

Within the rink, the halls are not particularly crowded compared to other arenas. Although there is no complete circulation around the entire bowl, crowds of people flow as smoothly as one would expect. Access is restricted in certain club areas of the hall, which have premium products, but recently the lack of toilets has been fixed.

Where to eat?

One of the most obvious places that Canacs have improved in the arena is food and drink. Rogers Arena does not suffer from standard arena preparation anywhere. Since the club brought its catering services, the usual and diverse foodstuffs have adopted unique and varied catering options.

Some of the most interesting concessions include poker and sushi, which take advantage of the famous fresh Vancouver fish. Another suitable concept is the Bacon Makes Everything Better pedestal, which delivers fresh bacon in a variety of forms (Canadian bacon, rasher, strips) and in various applications.

Other unique concepts include Catch with three different locations. Again using the rich seafood of the Pacific coast, the menu includes ingredients such as lobster — a definite step forward!

Carve, with four seats, is a place for hand-carved meats, piled on different sandwiches. Montreal sausages and smoked meats complete the sentence.

Steamers, named after the icon Canucks Stan ‘Steamer’ Smyl, is the place for gourmet hot dogs in sections 120 and 330. Melt, with three places, is the place for unique grilled cheeses. Triple O’s Triple-A is a popular Vancouver hamburger joint, and Vij’s popular local Indian provider is also in the arena.

Notably, Canucks also offer useful options. Smoothies can be enjoyed throughout the arena, as well as in the Santa area, offering healthier options. Finally, Sportbar Live! From Georgian Street is similar to the RealSports bar at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. It has a bar with the size of a blue line and a TV with many cabins. A ticket is not required to enter, although small tables with tickets offer a unique open view of the ice below.

To drink, a terrific selection of BC craft beers, ciders and wines are impressive additions to regular basic drinks. Draft beer starts at $ 8 per half a pint of 12 ounces (24 ounces for 14.50 dollars and above), and with brand name Pepsi — 4.75 dollars. As a bonus, a preliminary game “Happy half an hour” is provided before the puck with drinks, food and overalls for fans who arrive early.

Atmosphere

Outside, the arena seems to almost merge with the environment, without any noticeable main entrance. This is due to the fact that the rink is located under and between the overpasses and the Skytrain line. In addition, the condo tower was built at one corner of the arena, maximizing space in a dense city.

Even when compared to the usually densely packed NHL arenas across Canada, the Rogers Arena has a sense of verticality inside, with a level of 500 hanging almost directly above 300. This adds to the high arena, but the lines of sight are good everywhere. The seating bowls are quite symmetrical, with no particularly noticeable distinctive features in this regard, but the atmosphere is enhanced by the level of honor of the Canucks, which involves great club people. Although the banners still lack any memorable dates for the Stanley Cup, performances of the 2010 Olympic Gold, both men and women, are marked with banners. Large advertising images soar over the slogan “Compete in our nature.”

In the halls, modern video cards are combined with interpretive displays, including the celebration of the 2010 Olympic Games (with the image of the Canadian flag flying by players on the ice), and the reconstructed changing room with four legendary Canacan legends, Stan Smile, Matthias Allund, Marcus Naslund. and Trevor Linden.

Pregame predictions are well used. They complement the experience, but not overdone. During the break, hockey clubs from the BC are competing. while for specially selected young fans, the pre-game is enhanced by the opportunity to collect five players as they exit from the locker room.

Neighborhood

Rogers Arena is located in the eastern part of the peninsula in the city center, next to the legendary BC Place (the home of the lions BC CFL and MLS Vancouver Whitecaps).

A five minute walk from the arena, there is the large Chinatown of Vancouver, and the fashionable Gastown district, located outside of it, is the best place for fine cuisine, numerous bars and nightclubs. In the south, ten minutes away, is Yaletown, where you can also find trendy restaurants and nightclubs. The beautiful harbor of Falls Creek, the World of Science and the Olympic Village are within walking distance, as are the theaters and music centers on Granville Street.

The area immediately surrounding the arena is not particularly noteworthy, with the exception of nearby Costco, which has become a very popular place before the game for cheap food from an open window overlooking the arena. Indeed, it seems that the “real” experience of the Canucks can be to grab a cheap hot dog and soak up the mild winter weather that blesses Vancouver.

Vancouver itself is definitely one of the most exciting cities on the planet. Located among the river delta, it is surrounded by high mountains and the ocean. A world-class skiing experience is as close as a public transport trip to Gluh Mountain, near the famous resort of Whistler.

The city is blessed with a mild climate, and Vancouver is certainly the only city in Canada where you can leave your jacket at home before heading to the arena in the middle of winter. By the middle of the season, flowers are blooming, and a walk along the Stanley Park sea wall is an ideal way to enjoy the eternal spring weather.

The fans

As you would expect, Canucks fans are passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. Although in the past this passion was in full swing, visiting fans were likely to encounter only positive experiences at the rink.

However, a rather rare opportunity to actually get tickets for most Canucks games is less expected than these traits. Although the fact that fans in a very expensive city cannot sell mid-week games against opponents outside the division doesn’t hit It is somewhat unique compared to most other Canadian markets. Nevertheless, despite the mild climate, Vancouver is the same hockey city as elsewhere, and no one doubts the importance of the Canucks for the city and the province.

Additionally

Canucks really deserve an extra score for their active listening to their fans and innovative additions to what would otherwise be a worldly arena.

Constant gradual improvements added new premium zones and attractions for all fans.

An additional point is also for some thoughtful features of the arena, which are likely to be standard in future sports facilities. One such example is a quiet room for nursing parents or autism fans. There is also a TV to watch the action, but for some it may be necessary respite in the atmosphere of the arena.

Extra point for real efforts to attract young and new fans. At the hockey arena, such as Vancouver, it was an unexpected surprise to find a team that distributed certificates, stickers and buttons to fans attending their first game, Canucks. This practice is a great addition to places like Amalie Arena in Tampa, but it can be especially important in immigrant countries such as Vancouver, where the “We are All Kanaki” mantra is taken to heart.

Most teams have a talisman, but very few teams put them into action. Johnny Kanuk, the animated hero of the Canadian War, found in himself a double from real life, which takes part in the Canucks video and can be seen in the halls. This adds a unique touch that any fan can appreciate.

Finally, an additional point for environmentally conscious initiatives found throughout the arena. Vancouver embodies the spirit of the green west coast, and this continues with intensive processing and environmental efforts at Rogers Arena.

History

The arena was completed in 1995 and cost $160 million in private funding to replace the aging Pacific Coliseum as the main venue for events in Vancouver and as a home arena for the Vancouver Canadians of the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association. The Grizzlies spent six seasons in Vancouver before moving to Memphis, Tennessee.

The arena was briefly home to the Vancouver Ravens of the National Lacrosse League. Team operations have since been suspended. There have been attempts to revive the team a couple of times.

The arena received a new suspended scoreboard, which at that time was the largest in the NHL.

The arena was originally called General Motors Place under a sponsorship agreement with General Motors Canada and was widely known as “GM Place” or “The Garage”. It was temporarily renamed the “Canada Hockey Place” for a two-week period during the Winter Olympics due to the rules of the Olympic Games relating to corporate sponsorship of event venues. It was then announced that GM had refused to renew the naming rights and that Rogers Communications acquired the naming rights in a 10-year deal, according to which it was renamed Rogers Arena.

The following year, the arena entered into a five-year sponsorship agreement with PepsiCo, under which it became the exclusive supplier of beverages and snacks at Rogers Arena and received sponsorship positions. In addition, all the concerts at the Rogers Arena advertise the Pepsi Live venue at the Rogers Arena.
